What is BMI & How to calculate them?
BMI(Body Mass Index) is a simple numerical value calculated by dividing a person's weight (in kilograms) by the square of their height (in meters):
BMI = weight (kg) / height² (m²).It provides a quick screening tool to classify individuals based on body weight and estimate potential health risks related to body fat.
Different Categories of BMI :
Underweight: BMI < 18.5
Normal (Healthy weight): BMI 18.5 – 24.9
Overweight: BMI 25 – 29.9
Obese: BMI ≥ 30
Differences in BMI on the basis of Gender-
- Women naturally have a higher body fat percentage than men at the same BMI.
- Men often have more muscle, which can increase BMI without indicating excess fat.
There are some Limitations of BMI-
- BMI does not distinguish between fat, muscle, bone, or fluid.
- Athletes or muscular individuals may appear overweight or obese despite having little body fat.
- BMI also ignores fat distribution (e.g., abdominal vs. peripheral fat), which greatly affects health risk.
